I recently snagged a quilt at a garage sale for just $40, and let me tell you, it’s an adventure quilted with challenges! The heart of the project is a central rectangle bursting with fullness—think Swiss Alps level of extra fabric!

Wading Through Quilt Wonkiness

The center of this quilt presents a real challenge with its eight borders and a sampler of different blocks. The borders themselves lie fairly flat, but the middle is a different story. One viewer suggested removing a few inner borders, and in hindsight, it wasn’t a bad idea, but alas, I’m too invested now to turn back. After all, wonky quilts are my specialty!

Getting Down to the Details

Quilting a large quilt, like this one measuring 87 by 106 inches, is no small feat. It involved some thoughtful preparation—choosing the right batting, ensuring the quilt lies smoothly across my long-arm rails, and deciding against washing it due to its fraying edges. Instead, I’m embracing the challenge, working through the fullness to spread it evenly across the quilt’s surface.

The Art of Quilting Technique

I love using my own free motion design, “Plume,” which is quite fitting for a quilt with such personality. Navigating the fullness, I apply a technique of pushing fabric into a swoop then pulling it back to avoid pleats. It’s quilting magic in motion, and I’m excited to share these insider tips with you during this Live & Unscripted episode.

Embracing the Challenge

Through each pass, I’m learning more about this quilt’s temperament—how it shifts, where it needs extra fabric easing, and where the fullness simply can’t be disguised. It’s a journey of managing expectations and accepting that perhaps the quilt won’t be perfectly square, but it will definitely be full of stories and character.

Wisdom for Quilters

For every quilter tackling a challenging project, remember to lay your quilt flat before attaching borders and measure all around—average out inconsistencies and consider each stitch a chance to learn and enjoy the process. And if faced with an inherited project riddled with quirks, just remember: it’s all part of the quilting adventure.

And, if you’re joining from a similar sewing escapade, drop a comment. Let’s share stories, tips, and a collective laugh at the whims of quilting quilts!

Thank you for joining me on this fun, sometimes wonky quilting journey. Let’s embrace the charm, the challenge, and the community that quilting brings. Until next time, happy quilting!
